Profile Preview :: Pete Anderson, aka Second in Command

Going through the chain of command, LSCM’s Vice President is quite the interesting fellow who has a knack for home brewing, but I’ll get into that later.  Say hello to Pete Anderson.  Pete is a 2009 graduate of Bethel University where he earned his Bachelors in Business Marketing and minored in History (a not so known fact!).  While attending Bethel he took a Personal Investments class that helped to fuel his interest in investing.  He  has also dabbled in day trading and has had success in doing so.

Currently Pete is in Business Development and Sales at a commercial printer based in the Twin Cities.  One minor draw back to his (heck, almost everyone’s) blossoming career is working for The Man; in this case that man happens to be his father.  As you could imagine, working with someone who knows you too well can have its disadvantages.  When he is not working on Minnesota Twin’s print projects, part of his summer is spent as head coach of the Bloomington Blue Legion baseball team.  Outside of work, various seasonal hobbies include skiing, fishing, golfing, and casual photography/editing.

When asked by Ben to join an investment club, it was Pete’s curiosity and eagerness to further learn investing and build his experience that drew him in.  A few years from now, Pete is hoping to continue growing his friendship with club members as well as making decent returns from investing.  10 years from now branching out into larger investments and starting a brew pub are in the plans while starting a firm remains in the dreams (for now!).

For help on investing, Pete turns his teachings from Medvedoski, a professor at Bethel, The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, various knowledgeable formats from Warren Buffet, and some nameless-at-this-time inside sources.  You can forget about the big stick with this guy (unless it’s a ski pole), Pete’s favorite thing about being Vice President is being a soft spoken leader.

Other favorite things of his are a number of movies, with A River Runs Through It topping his charts.  MGMT, Vampire Weekend and Queen frequently vibrate his ear drums while A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, The Tip Point, Tribes, and The Great Gatsby draw in his eyes.  Medium rare to rare steaks and breakfast food at anytime of day make his mouth drool and his multiple ways of cooking eggs are second to none.

As mentioned before, the home brewing is the start to a dream of Pete’s; turning it into a business.  One day he’d like to open a bar/grill/microbrew across the street from Target Field called Twin Town.  Second choice would be Pillager Pete’s, a bar/grill/marina.  He would also like to note that he has rights to both names and we shouldn’t get any ideas!  In case it wasn’t blatantly obvious already, three loves of Pete’s life are food, beer, and baseball.

Dictionary: Definition; True Man?  Pete Anderson.

Cheers

Partner Profile :: Ben Turnwall, aka The Prez

It’s time to meet the first member of LSCM, the elected President, Mr. Benjamin Richard Turnwall.  With the rapidly approaching 24th year of his life this January, Ben has been keeping himself busy throughout all of our Minnesota seasons.  Whether he’s playing baseball in the summer, snowboarding in the winter or continuing to work year round on the headquarters of LSCM, aka the “Man Cave”, one place you know he’ll always be is working out at the YMCA.
Ben is a December 2009 graduate of Bethel University here in St. Paul, where he received his Bachelors in Business with emphasis in both Marketing and Finance.  While in attendance at Bethel, he has also held down jobs with the City of Burnsville, Allegra Edina, and Hays Companies as well as being employed by Bethel.  Currently he is at SPS Commerce as an Implementation Analyst.
Ben’s interest in investing has been around for a while, but he really started thinking about start an investment club after graduating college.  Even with having some CD’s in the past and a Roth IRA since his freshman year of college, what really pushed him to start an investment club was his Dad’s investment group from the 90’s.  Once Ben started a “real” job there simply wasn’t a better time to propose the idea to a group of friends.  Ideas of hanging out with 10 other good friends twice a month, learning how the market ticks, and the hopefully not too far off chance of the club turning into a company danced in his head like sugar-plums.
Five years down the road, Ben hopes that LSCM will continue to grow stronger in knowledge; firm understandings of how the market works, how to predict stock prices, and how to tell an EPA from a Stout.  As things continue, 10 years from now he hopes for the club to have a diversified portfolio covering stocks, mutual funds, bonds, options, and even real estate.  Putting years aside, Ben dreams that LSCM with find the next Microsoft of the 70’s, take off and grow into a large investment firm.  To help fulfill his hopes and dreams, he turns to Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor”, Yahoo Finance, Ameritrade, and Investopedia for further learning and influential guidance.
When asked, “What is the best thing about being President” Ben replied, “The best part about being president is that I can tell the secretary what to do regardless if he wants to do it or not, like updating the blog or sending out the post meeting minutes within 3 days.”  Layman’s terms?  “I get to hide behind this title and finally have the power I rightfully deserved years ago over these hood rats.”  Besides that, being President enables him to know what everyone is doing and what their responsibilities are so he can help keeping the club organized and running smoothly.
Some fun facts about Ben: his favorite movies are Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Patriot, Avatar, Grand Torino, Step Brothers, The Hangover, and Wedding Crashers; favorite books are The Hardy Boys series, anything by author Dan Brown, and Wild at Heart; and his favorite food is literally any food you can think of.  Literally.
Lastly, if Ben could write a book, it would be titled “211.”  Very much like the a blog kept throughout our senior year at Bethel, it would contain the ramblings and ridiculous situations our room went through.  Anyone or thing associated with Heritage room 211 would fill the pages, with famed stories such as the night at the Wild Onion, Campus Legend, Bonus Days, Matt/Geoff’s Futon, Baseball, Phone Calls, Lucia, Franky and Garbage Runs just to name a few.  Ben would also like to add that we could actually write a book.
Here's hoping that your dreams come true, Benny!
Cheers
